Over the past several days, I’ve been following Asian-American media, talking about the La Jolla Playhouse, whose creative team decided to stage a play set in ancient China with a cast of all-White leads, and only two minor roles out of 12 cast with Asian-American actors.
The (sadly, unsurprising) insensitive casting decisions & stubbornness of the Playhouse have been frustrating - but I’ve been encouraged by the open and thoughtful dialogue that’s followed within the Asian-American community.
Inspired by this latest incident of open bias in casting, I wrote a spoken word piece this morning, entitled “COLORBLIND”. This evening, my friend Tommy (YTF, Fung Bros., KevJumba) helped me shoot a short performance video for the piece.
I offer this piece in the hope that it will spark discussion & even, just maybe, growth.
